Why Is There No Magic Pill?

Imagine a world where there was a magic pill that allowed people to eat and drink whatever they wanted without it affecting them. Wow, that kind of diet pill would be incredible, wouldn’t it? It would fly off the shelves, drug companies would make billions, and so many people would be “happier,” “more confident,” or have a “higher self esteem.” Why haven’t we been blessed with something like this yet? And is it something we might have access to in the future?

Maybe, but I seriously doubt it.

Contrary to what the mass public thinks, the world of weight loss and muscle gain is quite complex. It comes down to physiology, science, and equations. Particularly fascinating is that everyone has their own equation that works for them, and fully understanding this can completely eradicate the guesswork, trial and error, or yo-yo dieting that’s typically associated with weight loss.

Once you master these equations, you’ll likely never struggle with your weight again. But there’s no “one size fits all” approach to your body chemistry; every one of us is so different on so many levels, which is why we all have our own equations.

Here are just a few off the top of my head:

  1. Day to day food and beverage consumption
  2. Past level of activity
  3. Current level of day-to-day activity
  4. Your family history and genetics (although this has a smaller role to play than most would believe)
  5. Efforts you may have done in the past for weight loss or weight gain
  6. Methods you have attempted in the past (i.e. fad dieting, fasting, dietary restrictions)
  7. How much muscle you currently have
  8. Body fat percentage
  9. Lean body mass

This brings me to fad diets, such as juice cleansing, Isogenix, fasting, detoxes, and others, which people succumb to far too readily. Just as there is no magic pill, there is no “one size fits all” fad diet that can give everyone the gift of weight loss or muscle gain. The fact of the matter is that everyone’s lives are so vastly different from one another that what works for one person likely won’t work for another.

You see, people with so many unique differences attempting one specific diet are going to face vastly different results and repercussions. From my personal perspective, fad diets are extremely short term “quick fixes” meant to shock your system into obtaining quick visual results, which of course fulfills society’s need for wanting everything fast with as little work as possible.

Transformations don’t happen overnight.

The proponents of fad diets are typically the people who have rejected the facts and have been given exactly what they were looking for: short-term results that required very little investment. If this is your definition of a good diet, then you are likely someone who has tried countless diets, will always be dieting or worrying about your weight, and who will likely be seeing a lot of fad dieting in the future. But just so you know: these immediate and short term results will spin away from you faster than a wheel of cheese down a slippery slope (weird visual?). You will be left in an even worse position than before because nothing immediate lasts long.

While there might not be a magic pill—and that’s a bummer—think of the fad diet as today’s magic pill. It’s something that does not exist, does not work, and will never give you long-term satisfaction. Attempt to understand your body and realize it is not magic. It does take commitment, but the journey to good health might not take as long as you think. The effort will 100% pay off, you’ll end up with lasting results, and you will never have to question why there is no magic pill ever again.
